Matteo and Rosa De Santis were raised in farm families in Italy. After moving to the United States and getting married, they owned a grocery store but longed for the Italian farmland they were raised on. They worked hard and finally bought their own 20-acre farm in Fresno, which Rosa says reminds them of their Italian homeland. Their four children grew up helping the family farm grow a variety of fruits and nuts to sell directly to customers at farmers markets. They began selling at Heart of the City Farmers’ Market in 1984 and are most proud of their unique specialty fruits including Buddha’s Hands, Kiefer Limes, Italian Lemons, Pink Lemons, Blood Oranges, and Muscato Grapes, varieties you won’t find in a supermarket. Rosa says what she loves best about being a farmer is being close to family – and she loves that her customers, many of whom have been shopping at her stall for decades, feel like family too.
